Sam Caligiuri wins Primary For 5TH
Sam Caligiuri has won a three-way race for the Republican nomination to run for Connecticut's 5th Congressional District against current congressman Chris Murphy. Mr. Caligiuri has a record of supporting second amendment rights and is considered a friend of sportsmen. Along with Sam, Martha Dean won her primary challenge to run for CT's Attorney General. Martha is also considered a friend of sportsmen and is a strong second amendment advocate. Both deserve the support of all sportsmen in the general elections this fall.

Fee Rebate & Handgun Deer Hunting Pass
NWCSC sponsored Bill No. 207; to authorize the use of Handguns for Deer Hunting, along with a Senate amendment to authorize the rebate of license fees to sportsmen who purchased licenses at the 100% increase, has now been passed in both the House and Senate and signed into law by the Governor. Our thanks go out to Representative Craig Miner for his role in introducing this Bill on behalf of the NWCSC and his knowledgeable leadership in following Bill No. 207 through to a successful completion. We also want to thank Senator Roraback and Representative Willis for supporting this effort. Once again, the Legislative delegation from NW CT proved effective in representing sportsmen's issues. Our thanks to Governor Rell for her consideration in signing this bill into law.

NWCSCPromotes New Hunting Regulations
At the March meeting of the Conservation Advisory Council to DEP, NWCSC delegates promoted several pro-hunting regulation changes. First we proposed changes to the pheasant program that will fully fund the program and offer sportsmen a longer season with a more liberal season bag limit. By fully funding this user pay program, we hope to see more areas opened to pheasant hunting and more pheasants available for stocking in the future. 2: Open the coyote season in May to licensed turkey hunters. 3: Add a night hunting season for coyotes. We also supported a UBC proposal to extend bow-hunting hours to 1/2 hour after sunset.

Housatonic WMA Habitat Project Completed!
The Wildlife Division of CT DEP has completed a habitat management project on a portion of the Housatonic River WMA. This project was sponsored by the NWCSC with an initial $3,000- grant. The project area is about 7 miles south of Cornwall Center on the west side of Rt #7. We have reclaimed about 16 acres of old field land, renewing habitat to benefit small game and songbirds. This project was completed in early 2008 and subsequent visits to the site throughout the summer demonstrated improvements in plant species diversity and wildlife use. Visitors are welcome to stop by and view the work.
